Less Caffeine in Pour-Over? You Can’t Fool the Math
Does pour-over have less caffeine? Many coffee enthusiasts entering the world of specialty coffee assume from the start that pour-over methods contain less caffeine because of their clean profile and milder flavor. Nothing could be further from the truth.
The rule is simple: the longer the water is in contact with the ground beans, the more caffeine it extracts into the brew. With espresso, extraction usually takes about 25–30 seconds. It’s a quick, intense shot. However, when you’re making a pour-over (our motto is “BREW IT SLOW” for a reason)—whether in a V60 dripper or a classic pour-over coffee maker—the water flows through the ground beans for 2, 3, and often even 4 minutes.
What’s more, you often use more coffee beans (e.g., 18–20 g) for a large pour-over cup than for a single shot of espresso. The result? Coffee brewed using pour-over methods will ultimately provide you with significantly more caffeine than a classic espresso.
Light roast = low stimulation? Another myth
Specialty coffees for pour-over methods are light-roasted. This roasting profile preserves the best qualities of the bean—its unique terroir, purity of flavor, and fruity notes. However, there’s a common misconception that the lighter the roast, the less caffeine it contains, because “the coffee is less roasted.” Or, conversely, that the roasting process “kills” the caffeine.
The fact is that caffeine is a substance that is extremely resistant to the high temperatures of the roaster. The degree of roast has a marginal effect on how much caffeine remains in the bean. The difference lies elsewhere—in the density of the beans. Lightly roasted coffee (like our Ethiopia Gera [FILTER] with notes of kumquat and dark oolong) is heavier and denser than very dark-roasted beans. If you measure coffee “by eye” or by teaspoons, you’ll simply end up using more grams of light-roast coffee. That’s why it’s so important to use a scale! By measuring out, say, 15g, you’ll always get a similar “kick,” regardless of whether the beans were roasted lightly or darkly.

What if you want a clean taste, but without the aftertaste?
As people who grew up in skate culture, we know full well that it’s not always about going all out. Sometimes you just want to have a good time late at night, without staring at the ceiling until 4 a.m.
That’s why at TRIGGER ROASTERY, in addition to our bold pour-over coffees (be sure to try our Banger Brew Rose Donut), we have an ALL TASTE, NO CAF category. Our Colombia El Indio (naturally decaffeinated) proves that a decaf pour-over can be much tastier than any compromise you’ll find on the market. The same attention to quality, weekly drops, roasted within 14 days, but zero jitters.
Caffeine Is Always With You
You don’t have a scale, grinder, or your favorite dripper on hand because you’re on the road or out and about, but need a strong and flavorful pour-over? No excuses. We’ve created our TRIGGER Coffee Drip Bags (like the classic NUTTY or the wild WINEY). All you need is hot water to brew a great cup without compromising on quality—and, of course, with just the right amount of caffeine that releases smoothly over time.
To sum it up: Pour-over isn’t just “weak tea.”
It’s a powerful, complex, and caffeine-packed experience—as long as you use good beans.
Check out our latest drops (new coffees, new gear, no unnecessary extras), and add beans to your cart that really make a difference.
